Ethos Family News
Unlike the common movie depiction of a cabin in the woods, we'd like ours to be neat, clean, and full of natural light. To accomplish particularly that last goal, our current drawings call for 2-3 walls of glass for each structure. It turns out sliding glass door panes are a great size for framing into a house and they can sometimes be obtained used for a very reasonable price.
However, while sometimes is pretty often in the greater Seattle area, it is not so often in Maine. So we spent Saturday buying glass. Lots of glass. 70 panes of glass.
We estimate the total weight to be about 3500 pounds. The new truck can handle that much weight just fine, but the glass could not - for ease of transport we had to stack the panels lying horizontally. We took two trips, about 35 panels each.
Trip one was a learning experience. We didn't bring enough tie-downs and hit the final turn for the freeway off-ramp just a little too fast. Half the glass panels slid 6 inches to the right and two of them shattered. Trip two went off without a hitch, and only required the use of 9 straps to do so.
It's hard to tell, but the black rectangle in front of the very pleased looking boy is 36 glass panels very nicely lined up and secured.
Moving to the middle of nowhere has some challenges. As previously mentioned, our property is 3/4 of a mile from the pavement and the nearest utilities. Our two most recent purchases are going to come in very handy. The Truck The "driveway" from the road to our house is an old logging road, somewhat inexpertly maintained by [...]

Why are we transitioning from the standard gay urban lifestyle to a off-the-grid lifestyle? We as a leather family, feel that our current lifestyle is unsustainable in the financial, political and environmental direction that our society seems to be heading in. The pressure to make a major change in our lives seems to be increasing [...]
